Why might progesterone be prescribed along with estrogen?

One important reason is to protect the lining of the uterus when systemic estrogen is prescribed to someone who still has a uterus. Estrogen can stimulate that lining; an appropriate progestogen helps provide protection. The Menopause Society.

This is different from automatically adding progesterone to every kind of hormone treatment. Low-dose local vaginal estrogen is a separate situation, and your history and exact prescription matter.
