Women's Hormone Care

Does menopause hormone therapy also work as birth control?

No. Menopause hormone therapy is not contraception. Pregnancy can still be possible during perimenopause, even when periods become irregular. Treating hot flashes or other menopause symptoms does not establish that you no longer need pregnancy prevention. If you currently use birth control, that also belongs in the treatment conversation; do not assume a new hormone prescription replaces it or should simply be added to it. The appropriate plan depends on your circumstances. Next: Tell Valerie what you currently use for contraception and whether avoiding pregnancy is still part of your care needs. Clinical reference: NHS.
